Why Prep Is the Question Worth Asking
When homeowners ask us about painting, the first question is usually about color or price. The question that matters more is what happens before the first coat goes on. Paint is the part everyone sees, but prep is the part that decides how the finished surface looks and how well it holds up. When we put together a free estimate for a painting job, prep is a real part of the scope, not an afterthought.
What Our Painting Work Includes
Our painting work covers interior and exterior surfaces, and each job follows the same basic order: patch and prep, prime, then finish coats.
Patching and Prep
Holes, cracks and rough spots get patched and sanded before any paint goes on. Painting over them only highlights them, since a fresh coat shows every flaw in the wall underneath. On exteriors, surfaces are cleaned and scraped and then primed before the finish coats are applied. This is the slowest and least glamorous part of the job, and it is the part we do not skip.
Interior Painting
Inside the house, we paint walls, ceilings, trim and cabinets. Drop cloths go down to protect your floors and furniture, and edges are taped so lines come out clean where a wall meets trim or a ceiling.
Exterior Painting
Outside, we paint siding, trim and doors, and the work includes the parts that sit up high, such as soffits, fascia, eaves and second story trim. Those areas get the same careful prep as the walls at ground level. The aim is a finish that holds up to East Bay sun and fog.
When Painting Is Really a Sheetrock or Siding Question
Sometimes a painting call turns out to be about what is under the paint. A wall with a patch from an old leak, or a stretch of exterior siding that has come loose, will not look right however good the paint is. Because the same crew also handles sheetrock and siding, we can repair the surface and paint it as one job rather than asking you to line up two different contractors. If the damage comes from a leak at the roofline, our roofing and gutters work covers the source of the problem as well. You can read more about how we think about project size in our post on small updates versus full remodels.
Painting Alongside Other Work
Painting often fits naturally into a larger project. New flooring, a kitchen or interior remodel or a section of replaced siding all leave surfaces that need finishing. Having one team handle the painting means the finish work is planned together with the rest of the job, and nobody is waiting on a separate crew to show up at the end.
What to Expect From the Estimate
We do not quote a painting job sight unseen. A short visit lets us look at the surfaces, see how much patching and prep they need and tell you what the work involves. That is how the estimate ends up reflecting your actual house instead of a generic number for a generic room. The estimate is free.
